REVIEW
When it comes to rom-com, there’s only so much
one can do particularly Hollywood who is not that well-known
for its creativity. Boy A and Girl A happen to be close friends,
when Girl A meets Boy B, Boy A realizes he’s actually
smitten with girl A. Thus Boy A went all the way to snatch
girl A away from the hands of Boy B and they live happily
after.
Here
you go. End of review. Full stop.
Nah,
we are not that kind of irresponsible media who generally
gave thumbs up to whatever movies they laid their hands on
so we are going to tell you a bit more about "Made of
Honor".
Remember
people liked Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant and Tom Hanks
who dominate the genre? Tinseltown has expended their current
crop of actors and actress over the years thus television
hottest actor, Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy, Enchanted),
up-and-coming actress Michelle Monaghan (MI3, Gone Baby Gone)
are the latest recruits being lured to head this project.
Patrick
Dempsey dubbed McDreamy by the media plays Tom, a serial bed-hopper
who according to the script invented the coffee collar (which
explains why he can afford to spend his days fornicating,
coffee at starbucks, roaming central park and dim-sum with
his confidante Hannah) and to settle down is the last thing
on earth you will imagine this guy to do. But when his best
friend, Hannah (Monaghan) told him she’s settling down
with a wealthy Scottish guy, Tom starts panicking and realizes
Hannah is the one he really loves. I shan’t continue
and I suppose you know the drill.
One
good thing about Hollywood is their capability to repackage
a stale script to something that still manages a glance or
two. Reason of course being they possess infinite amount of
cash. This way, we get to admire Scotland’s vast greenery
and breath-taking scenery courtesy of Dempsey’s character,
Tom who flew from New York to Scotland to be the maid of honor.
On
top of that, there are occasional attempts at being comical
which might tickle the hearts of the audience. The basketball
sessions and a scene set in a restaurant where the maids of
honor are having a pre-wedding discussion are rib-tickling.
The late Sydney Pollack who appeared as Tom Senior (in his
last screen role) had some insane but useful advice for his
son too. What truly salvage this piece of generic rom-com
is the chemistry between Dempsey and Monaghan, the likeable
duo’s performances are simply amazing. At least I have
no qualms about believing they are meant to be together in
the first place.
It’s
surprising I actually enjoyed myself throughout the 101 minutes
duration. Maybe the recent stormy weather gets me in a 'chick-flick'
mode. "Made of Honor" is funny, easy on the eyes
and hell lot of sweetness although predictable, Dempsey and
Monaghan proves not just A-listers can rule the screen. Chemistry
counts too.
SPECIAL FEATURES :
There’s a Director Commentary track
here and Paul Weiland displays his dry wit occasionally besides
offering insights to the movie. The Making of the
movie is the usual cast and crew interviews featurette
which lasts no more than 15 minutes. Three Weddings
and a Skyline has the designer talking about she
gets around doing all the different wedding sets in the movie.
2 Deleted scenes can be found and they amount
to nothing but just extensions of two scenes.
AUDIO/VISUAL:
As
with other recent Sony’s theatrical releases, the visual
transfer is almost faultless. Presented in 2.40:1 anamorphic
widescreen, the images are crisp and clean. Nice aerial views
of New York City and Scotland. "Maid of Honor" obviously
is not a suitable movie to show off the surrounds, however
the dialogue and especially the love songs are soothing and
dynamic to the ears which make you want to pick up the OST
right away.
