SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

We believe there’s something in all of us that desires to be a traveler – a traveler who can put all mortal worries behind, and travel the world to be humbled by all the different cultural experiences out there. And one thing we believe that travelers should have with them during their journeys is music. So here we have this album to recommend for this purpose. The soundtrack to the movie starring Julia Roberts as a woman who takes off on a round the world journey to find herself is the perfect companion, for one hour, that is.

The album captures the different moods of the different cultures explored in the movie (without giving too much away, the female protagonist eats in Italy, prays in India and loves in Bali). The eclectic collection of 14 tracks by various artistes provides moments for reflection, retrospection, entertainment and most importantly, inspiration.

Kicking off the album is American folk roots pop singer songwriter Josh Rouse’s Flight Attendant. The rousing spirit of the tune will lift your spirits. After the somewhat subdued tone of the first track, you’d be enthralled by the sensual melody of “Last Tango in Paris” performed by Argentine jazz tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri, and the enjoyably retro lyrics of “Thank You (Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin) sung by the renowned rock funk soul band Sly & the Family Stone.

The inclusion of the classical tune “Der Hölle Rache Kocht In Meinem Herzen from Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute)” and the traditional Indian composition “Kaliyugavaradana” may alienate the casual listener, but it will heighten the listening experience if you took some time to appreciate them.

The influential Canadian singer Neil Young is represented by “Heart of Gold” and “Harvest Moon”, while Brazilian singer guitarist performs “Wave” and “’s Wonderful”. Oscar winning composer Dario Marianelli contributes the beautiful score track “Attraversiamo” – we wish we could hear more of his compositions though.

The best thing on this soundtrack has to be Eddie Vedder, the lead vocalist of alternative rock band Pearl Jam. After listening to his lovely works on the soundtrack of Into the Wild, he is back in this album, singing “The Long Road” (an interesting collaboration with Pakistani musician Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) and the new lead single “Better Days”.

One thing for sure, we are keeping this album close by our sides for a calming listening journey, should we travel the world anytime soon.
