REVIEW

In the Genesis about the Tower of Babel, the Lord said: Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other. In this review about the soundtrack album for the award-winning film, we say: We are quite confused about the eclectic choice of music on this two-disc album.

Featuring over two hours of music spread over 36 tracks, this soundtrack is probably value for your money. However, not every element for his assortment of music may be your cup of tea.

Providing the underscore is Argentinean composer Gustavo Santaolalla. After striking gold with his Oscar-winning score for 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, the 55-year-old is up for another Academy Award nomination at this year’s awards with this minimalist score.

Unlike his overplayed main theme for Brokeback Mountain, there is nothing much you can identify with here. There is still his signature plucky melody, but nothing that will leave much of an impression. At its best, tracks like “Tazarine” and “Deportation/Iguazu” provide the sorrowful mood felt in the film.

The diverse mix of tunes from and inspired by the motion picture include Mexican, Middle Eastern, Western and Oriental sounds. While songs from the West like “September-The Joker” may remind you of the good old times which was the 1970s, Mexican songs like “Mujer Hermosa” may not ring a bell. However, they do make for exotic listening.

The ultra J-pop “Oh Juliet!” is a dance-floor favourite while the Middle Eastern prayer-like tune “The Visitors” may not appeal to the younger crowd. There are also very uncomfortable tracks like Japanese composer Ryuchi Sakamoto’s “Only Love Can Conquer Hate” which only proves to be a disturbingly weary listen.

But one track to bring together this package has to be Sakamoto’s 2000 composition “Bibo no Aozora/04”. Like the film’s final poignant scene, this hypnotic and emotional piano and strings-layered track concludes the album with apt melancholy - music can serve as a unifying communication tool for man.
