SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

It seemed like a really hilarious idea at first – having the well-loved Chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore sing contemporary pop songs. Opening the 48-minute is Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day”, which had us rolling in stitches. Led by the adorable Alvin, his buddies Simon and Theodore provide backup chorus to the catchy song – you’d be chuckling non-stop at its ingenuity. Other such cutesy tunes include the retro “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc. and the classic “Only You (and You Alone)” by Platters. These songs are definitely a sure-hit with the young ones.

One should know by now the Chipmunks’ whiney voices are done by distorting the audio tracks in sound post production – you know those moments when you say: “Gosh that sounds like a chipmunk!” So, there are many moments when we couldn’t really make out what the Chipmunks were crooning. It doesn’t help that the Chipmunks’ voices are featured throughout the entire album. Depending on your mood, this disc can either be very funny or very irritating.

But take note, this animated fictional group did win Grammy Awards five times for their entertaining music, mind you.

This soundtrack to the live-action movie contains tunes that will resonate with today’s audiences. Songs like the heart-thumping “Come Get It” and “Get You Goin’” feature heavy hip-hop beats that will definitely be agreeable with the young ones.

Also included on the album are the two classic favorites “Witch Doctor” and “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)”. These two songs were featured in two 1960s episodes (go check them out on YouTube), Here, you’d get the classic versions as bonus tracks and a few modern remixes which are amusing to listen to. The repeated chorus in “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)” will have the “go-get-some-Christmas-presents” effect on you.
