SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

Listening to the lush music on this soundtrack has been the most beautiful and breathtaking 50 minutes of this reviewer’s life. Ever.

From the moment you hear the ingenious use of the old typewriter in the opening track “Briony” to the bittersweet tune in the closing track of French composer Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune”, you’ll be awed by the music included on this disc. The original score for Joe Wright’s award-winning film is composed by Oscar nominee Dario Marianelli. After his music for Wright’s Pride and Prejudice, Marianelli has gotten his second Oscar nomination for Best Original Score at the upcoming 80th Academy Awards for his brilliant work.

And I am really hoping that he takes home the golden man for his very deserving work.

The imaginative use of the 1930s typewriter is cleverly weaved into tracks like “Cee, You and Tea” and “With My Own Eyes”. If you have watched the film, you will realize how this innovative use of the sound effect works well dramatically. Even if you have not watched the picture, these memorably inventive compositions will excite your senses. While it heightens your listening experience, it will also leave you impressed with its inspired percussion instrumentation.

This is just one feature of this Golden Globe-winning score. You’ll also be swept away by the soundtrack’s gorgeous strings ensemble and heartrending piano solos performed by classical pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. The accompanying woodwinds complement the stunning music very nicely too. Whether it is the romantic “Love Letters,” the poignant “The Half Killed” or the seamlessly pieced together “Come Back”, every track on the disc is worth recommending for its affective tone and mood.

If I really had to choose the standout track, it’d be the heartbreaking “Elegy for Dunkirk”, which plays over the astounding five-odd-minute Steadicam long shot in the film. Incorporated with a hymn sung by the soldiers in the sequence, this cue will go down film music history as one of the most memorable ever.

Every soundtrack lover should own this masterpiece. Marianelli’s score is evocatively haunting. The music is satisfyingly unforgettable. In short, the soundtrack is perfect.
