You have to admit the one reason for picking up this soundtrack album is the irresistibly adorable minions featured on the cover. Have no idea who or what the minions are? Then we’d advise you to catch the movie – quick. For a 35 minute disc to be this compelling, it really shows the power of memorable movie characters has on consumers. The easy to digest album features new music by artistes like Pharrell, Robin Thicke, Destinee & Paris, and some well loved classics by The Bee Gees and The Sylvers.

Kicking off the soundtrack is the catchy and upbeat “theme song” of the protagonist (antagonist?) Gru simply entitled “Despicable Me”. The silly lyrics will have you chuckling in wonderment. Following that we have the breezy “Fun, Fun, Fun” by Pharrell (who also composed the zany score for the animated movie) and the radio friendly “I’m on a Roll” by Destinee & Paris.

And next up we have the minions providing background vocals for “Minion Mambo” – another silly but perky song which entertains as much as the very funny movie. Elsewhere, there is Robin Thicke belting out a rather soulful “My Life” and Pharrell continuing his style of cheerful music in “Prettiest Girls” and “Rocket’s Theme”.

You’d boogie along with old time favourites “Boogie Fever” and “You Should Be Dancing”. Finally, we have a ridiculously enjoyable “The Unicorn Song” performed by Agnes, one of the movie’s characters who is an orphan. She goes on and on singing “Unicorns, I love them” in loop mode. Don’t ask us why, but this track is rather hypnotic, and we dare to say it – it’s totally loveable.

The runtime for this album is considerably short, and may incur some fury amongst picky buyers. But hey, when the minions are gleefully gracing the CD cover, would you not want to place it on your shelf just to brighten up your day?
