SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

What happens when a whole gang of Academy Award winners gather to star in a movie musical? They sing, obviously. In this Rob Marshall directed feature, we have not one, not two, not three, but a whopping six Oscar winners belting out tunes in this movie based on based on Arthur Kopit's book for the 1982 Tony Award-winning musical of the same name.

Hold your breath now, and put your hands to welcome: Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Judi Dench (Shakespeare In Love), Marion Cotillard (La vie en rose), Sophia Loren (La ciociara) and Nicole Kidman (The Hours).

Sure, we aren't reading nice things about this Oscar bait which is yet to be released in Singapore, but if you were a fan of singing movie stars (a safe cue to take from would be Marshall's other 2002 movie musical Chicago), then you would love this soundtrack album to bits.

Day Lewis uses his deep vocals to sing "Guido's Song", Cruz puts her accented English to good use in "A Call From the Vatican", Dench and her maternal tone sounds lovely in "Folies Bergere", Cotillard adds a soft and gentle touch to "My Husband Makes Movies", Loren's voice is sophisticatedly apt on "Guarda La Luna", while Kidman breaks our hearts in "Unusual Way".

"In a very unusual way, one time I needed you./ In a very unusual way, you were my friend./ Maybe it lasted a day/ Maybe it lasted an hour./ But somehow it will never end."

If you do not want to indulge yourself in melancholy, and is in the mood for something spicier, there's always Fergie's (yes, that girl from The Black Eyed Peas in another movie after 2006's Poseidon and 2007's Planet Terror) alluring "Be Italian" and Kate Hudson's Golden Globe nominated "Cinema Italiano". The butt shaking worthy tunes would be favourites on your mobile player.

The 57 minute album also includes bonus tracks "Quando Quando Quando" (Fergie), a remix of the salsa heavy "Cinema Italiano", and another heartbreaking rendition of "Unusual Way" performed by newcomer Griffith Frank. Now, if you would excuse us, we are going to drown ourselves in depression while listening to this tear inducing song.

"In a very unusual way, I think I'm in love with you./ In a very unusual way, I want to cry./ Something inside me goes weak, something inside me surrenders./ And you're the reason why./ You're the reason why."
