SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

Nope, you aren’t going to hear Robert Pattinson (that’s Edward Cullen to all you Twi Fans out there) on this original soundtrack to the successful Twilight Saga franchise. While this reviewer didn’t think too highly of the frustratingly tiresome movie, he has better things to say about this CD compilation featuring a great collection of 14 songs, and a score track by the award winning composer Howard Shore.

The 59 minute album opens with Canadian indie rock and New Wave band Metric’s “Eclipse (All Yours)”. Not your typical angst ridden rock tune which sits on the edge of being whiny, this one is easy on the ears with a nice touch of indie. English alternative rock band Muse follows up with the soulfully melancholic “Neutron Star Collision (Love is Forever)”, which will probably appeal to the edgier listener. The music of American rock band The Bravery and independent English rock artist Florence and the Machine are also part of this varied platter of music.

The standout track on the album has to be Australian soulf and jazz pop singer and songwriter Sia’s “My Love”. The hypnotic tune brings to mind a romantic image with a couple on a breathtakingly beautiful field of blossoming flowers. Oh wait, that scene does appear in the opening and closing sequences of the David Slade directed movie.

Elsewhere, listen out for pleasing tracks by Fanfario and Band of Horses (“Atlas” and “Life on Earth”), rollicking tunes by The Black Keys, The Dead Weather and Vampire Weekend (“Chop and Change”, “Rolling in on a Burning Tree” and “Jonathan Low”) and other cool artistes of today’s music industry.

The soundtrack closes with Shore’s melancholic “Jacob’s Theme”. If it is of any consolation to Team Jacob, this piano track is a emotionally gripping composition which will have you doting on the werewolf’s love for Bella. For more of Shore’s heartfelt music, you’d have to look to the score soundtrack. Meanwhile, if you aren’t a fan of the dreadful movie, do not worry about this soundtrack – it’s worth a place in your collection of albums.
