SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

The soundtrack album cover of this Quentin Tarantino directed film is so rustic and mannish, it seems to be screaming: Let’s all go to war and rough it out! Yes, the statement needs to be marked with an exclamation to bring out the wrath and fury – blast and boom the sounds of war!

If you have been a collector of the soundtracks which contain music handpicked by the auteur himself, you wouldn’t miss this one out. The distinctive choice of music from Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Death Proof has delighted listeners everywhere, and with these 14 tracks from the brilliant war movie, the genius director has left us clapping our hands in glee again.

The album is dripping with old school cool: Nick Perito’s Spanish flavoured “The Green Leaves of Summer” reminds us of how cool the opening credits were, Ennio Morricone’s classical and contemporary fused “The Verdict (La Condanna)” reminds us of how cool Colonel Hans Landa’s (Christoph Waltz) chilling entrance was, and Charles Bernstein’s “White Lightning (Main Title)” reminds us of how cool the Basterds were.

The legendary Morricone makes his presence felt in this album with two other very splendid tracks “Un Amico” and “Rabbia e Tarantella”. One is a romantically charged piece that will get anyone’s emotions all fired up, while the other is a fitting finale to another impressive work directed by Tarantino. Morricone was attached to score the film, but eventually had to pull out due to scheduling conflict, and we hear in the film are several of his fitting compositions. Also included on this excitingly eclectic collection of enjoyable music are English musician David Bowie’s “Cat People (Putting Out The Fire)”, Argentine pianist and composer Lalo Shifrin’s “Tiger Tank” and Swedish singer Zara Leander’s “Davon Geht Die Welt Nicht Unter” – each has its unique style and each add its own eccentric touch to the album.

If there is one thing to complain about, it would be the short 37 minute runtime of the album. And if we could add one more complaint, that would be the absence of sound bites from the movie. We were hoping so much to hear Brad Pitt say: “Each and every man under my command owes me one hundred Nazi scalps!”

ALBUM RATING:

Recommended Track: : (13) Un Amico – Ennio Morricone
