SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
If you don’t already know, Zac Efron is like, the biggest teen sensation now. We heard him proudly proclaim how he is the “Ladies’ Choice” on the soundtrack of “Hairspray”. He also told how it’s “Now or Never” on the soundtrack of “High School Musical 3: Senior Year”. Much as we want him to croon a few tunes on this album (you’ve got to admit it, this boy’s got a decent voice to charm the socks off many, many, many girls), we can’t find his name on the track listing – what blasphemy!
But do not fear, because this soundtrack album does feature a decent lineup of songs performed by indie rockers. And these are musicians whose names will make you proud when you mention them at parties.
English rock ‘n’ roll group Vincent Vincent and the Villains (yes, judging by their group name – they are indie) kicks off the 44 minute album with the catchy “On My Own”. The jolly tune will have you repeating the chorus of “I’m on my own, I’m on my own”, complete with a smile on your face. This is followed by The Helio Sequence’s (the band was formed in 1999 in Portland, Oregon and that makes them indie too) “Can’t Say No”. Similarly, you may find yourself humming to the chorus “You can’t say no, You can’t say no” repeatedly with this synthesizer heavy tune.
More indie tracks follow” From Santigold’s soulful “L.E.S. Artistes” and The Kooks’ accessible “Naïve” to The Duke Spirit’s rollicking appealing “You Really Wake Up The Love In Me” and Cat Power’s soothing “The Greatest” (which was also featured on the soundtrack of “My Blueberry Nights”), there is something to please the casual listener.
Motion City Soundtrack, an American rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota performs “This Is For Real”, the energetic highlight track on this bouncily lively album. The youthful energy will evoke images of everyone’s favourite teen phenomenon Efron charming girls with his blue, blue eyes.
So what if he doesn’t contribute his vocals on this album? It comes with an autographed pull out poster (err, a printed autograph actually – but that’ll do), and we are guessing that’s enough to please fans who do not have any idea the gems that are contained in this soundtrack.
