SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

If you don’t already know, the box office success headlined by Optimus Prime and friends are making waves as huge as director Michael Bay’s signature explosions is one deafening movie affair. And get prepared as this score album takes you on a strident listening experience that the clunky robots in disguise will be proud of.

Composer Steve Jablonsky (TV’s Desperate Housewives, Friday the 13th) made news headlines when his score for the first Transformers movie got released four months after the blockbuster’s premiere. The album was only released after an online petition signed by some 5000 fans surfaced. Naturally, we’d be expecting a lot from this sequel score (thankfully, this one got a timely release). To fans of the action genre, get ready a high end sound system to blast this album loud and clear.

Kicking off the disc is the grand “Prime”, which exemplifies the Autobot leader’s majestic magnificence. Here you’d pick up the main theme as strings escalate to a high point at the end of the brief two minute runtime. Following that is “Einstein’s Wrong”, an upbeat cue that begins cheekily before the mood turns into something ominous menacing (if you have watched the movie, you’d know what’s happening here). And with “NEST”, the soundtrack becomes a guilty pleasure where Linkin Park’s song “New Divide” is infused into the rowdy electronica arrangement.

After the somewhat numbing “The Shard” and “The Fallen”, chorals are introduced in “Infinite White”, and the striking image of splendid landscapes come into mind. One of the shortest cues on this album, “Forest Battle” is a very engaging listen which starts off in a daunting and intimidating manner before concluding with a pompous bang.

Tracks like “Precious Cargo”, “Matrix of Leadership” and “I Claim Your Sun” are intensely enjoyable to listen to, with grand brasses and strings playing up the immensity of the phenomenon that is The Autobots vs. The Decepticons.

The movie may be 150 minutes long, but this album only gives you 44 minutes of listening pleasure – would another online petition bring about more of the music that we heard on screen? While we doubt so, we are not complaining, because playing this album (warning: the music may not appeal to listeners who are into more sentimental stuff) gives us a victorious feeling we’ve never felt in a long time – it’s almost like Optimus Prime crushing The Fallen in the finale of the movie. You go, Optimus!
