REVIEW

Trust the marketing folks to come up with this idea of a compilation of songs “honouring the legend of Superman”. To cash in on this summer blockbuster, the record label has released this soundtrack album containing 14 covers and original songs recorded by new bands, which may be unfamiliar with local listeners.

Is this a necessary soundtrack for fans of the Man of Steel? Not really, if you ask us. But it does make for good casual background listening if you do not mind the switching of genres between indie-rock to appealing-pop throughout the 51-minute album.

While tracks like “The Rescue” by American Hi-FI and “Saved” by The Spill Canvas (yes, these names do not really ring a bell with us either) are fresh and pleasurable to listen to, there are tunes like “Sunshine Superman” and by The Films and “Brainiac’s Daughter” by Royal which are too unique for our liking.

At the end of the album, there may not be one single track which sticks in your head. It will take repeated listening for the songs to grow on you. It will help that if you have a strong liking for standard American music. If not, the soundtrack may just be another collection of songs which make no significance to you anyhow.

If you are a die-hard fan of Superman since his television heydays in the 1950s, you’d find yourself reminiscing some of the tunes which are supposedly inspired by those good old days where your favourite superhero did not have any angst or cynicism in him.

Perhaps this is the best way to regard this album, where its songs are meant to be enjoyed. Overlook the part where they tell you that these tunes have been inspired by Clark Kent’s alter ego, and you’d find yourself enjoying this average compilation of songs.
