SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

Like last year’s Little Miss Sunshine, this movie is a great little film everyone wants to love. And along with it comes a little gem of a soundtrack that everyone would want to love too. With its chart topper status on the US Billboard Top 200 within the album’s one-month release, you can get an idea how fans are snapping up this soundtrack. It is no wonder why this 46-minute album is a hit with listeners – just look at the collection of classic rock hits and indie rock favourites included in this disc. It’s a perfect example of how a soundtrack complements the movie and plays nicely on its own.

The folksy “All I Want is You” opens the soundtrack with a cheery blend of harmonica and guitar, singing about the enchantment of being able to fall in love. Then there is Kimya Dawson’s “My Rollercoaster”, which is a whimsical tune with no lyrics but the American singer-songwriter’s “doo doo doo-ing”. The female lead vocal in the indie group The Moldy Peaches has a unique voice that will leave you wanting for more. It is a pity this anti folk group has been on hiatus since 2004. This means that this soundtrack is a decent representation of the group’s music, because Dawson performs several other tracks on the album.

The classic tunes on the disc come rock and roll pioneer Buddy Holly (the soothing “Dearest”), alternative rock band Sonic Youth (the strangely edgily comforting “Superstar”) and 1970s English R & B rock band Mott the Hoople (the lovely “All the Young Dudes” written by the incredible David Bowie). Sing with us now: “All the young dudes carry the news!”

One of the highlights of this album is definitely its poetic lyrics which are quirky and fun to listen to. Sample these: “The cat wished that it was a bee/ The turtle wished that it could fly” (“Tree Hugger”), “You’re a part time lover and a full time friend/ The monkey on your back is the latest trend” (“Anyone Else But You”) and “I’m a vampire/ I’m a vampire…/ And I’ve lost my fangs” (“Vampire”). Sure they may sound silly at first listen, but you may just find yourself humming along to the catchy tune after spinning the album in your player a few times.

ALBUM RATING:
