SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

Slashing people’s throats isn’t the most difficult thing Johnny Depp has to do in the latest movie directed by the ingenious Tim Burton. Putting on the pale make-up for the titular character of Sweeney Todd probably isn’t too thorny an issue for the Oscar-nominated actor too. We believe that the most tricky part of being in this musical thriller is having to, gasp, sing! And a lot of it too! Fans of the talented actor (that probably is the whole world) need not worry: Depp does a fine job on this soundtrack album.

From the sorrowful “No Place Like London” and the grief-stricken “My Friends” to the relaxed “Pretty Women” and the angst-ridden “Epiphany”, Depp’s vocals express the emotions of the vengeful and tormented serial killer aptly. Joining him in duets and ensemble tunes are acclaimed actors like Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham Carter, who do a fairly good job of singing too.

Depp’s leading lady Carter may sound wafer thin on the various tracks she performs on the disc, but is still effectively whimsical on “By The Sea” and affectionately motherly on “Not While I’m Around”. Listen out for the wacky “The Contest” showcasing Sacha Baron “Borat” Cohen and his wildly madcap Italian accent.

Those who have heard the original Broadway versions of the songs will note that some of the notable songs have been excluded on this movie version, probably to compact the picture. And given that the original Broadway versions of the songs were performed by acclaimed artistes like Angela Lansbury and Geroge Hearn, strict opera fans may diss this movie version. But we’d still like to give some credit points to the actors who have painstakingly performed on the soundtrack of this Oscar-nominated movie.

Because of its theatrical nature, the soundtrack may not appeal after its first spin. But upon repeated listens, the emotions of the characters will grow on you. The standout show tune “Johanna” will be the first to attract you, thanks to lead singer Jamie Campbell Bower’s passionately affecting vocals. And somewhere out there, there is another edition of this soundtrack featuring three extra tracks from the movie.

Our advice: Watch the movie, buy the soundtrack, and then enjoy the killer music.
