ALBUM REVIEW:

On 25 June 2009, something happened. The King of Pop died at the age of 50 after suffering from cardiac arrest. He was reportedly administering drugs and his death was ruled a homicide. If this hadn’t happened, then this soundtrack wouldn’t be in our hands. And we wouldn’t remember what it was like to celebrate music that Michael Jackson created.

Containing 16 tracks that inspired the movie, this disc can be seen as nothing more than a compilation of MJ songs that marked a generation. It can also be seen as a collection of music that reaches into MJ’s remarkable spirit. No matter how you look at it, this is one soundtrack you would want to own on your shelf.

Kicking off the disc is the energetic “Wanna Be Startin’ Something” and “Jam”, before the poignant “They Don’t Really Care About Us” and “Human Nature” take over. Then, listeners are treated to the iconic “Smooth Criminal” and “The Way You Make Me Feel”. Swing to the beats of “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)” and “I Just Can’s Stop Loving You”, before MJ’s signature tunes “Thriller”, “Beat It” and “Black And White” are dished for your listening pleasure. The inspiring “Earth Song”, the upbeat “Billie Jean” and the meaningful “Man In The Mirror” are next in line, before MJ belts out two versions of “This Is It”, the only new songs in this soundtrack.

If you could hunt down the two disc version of this soundtrack, we are advising you that the extra disc which contains three demo tracks and a poem recited by the King of Pop himself is a more worthy buy.

Notice how this review need not elaborate too much on the individual songs to tell you how these songs have shaped MJ’s colourful career. Instead of cynically commenting on how the whole concept of this concert documentary is a money milking machine, let’s take a moment to remember the goodness of MJ. As the lyrics of this pleasant tune go: “And this love/ I can feel/ And I know/ Yes for sure It is real”, it’s time we realise living life is all about the love.
