Step
up is the latest installment of the Save the Last Dance-Honey-Take
the Lead axis of dance-pirational movies, featuring a white
lout burning up the chequered floor with a snotty ballet dancer
set in the context of a big black city. Listening to this
album, it is possible to appreciate the movie even before
watching it in the theatres. Step
up to the chest-thumping clothes-tearing hip-hop beats of
Sean Paul, Yung Joc, Kelis, Ciara and Chamillionaire. Unfortunate
monikers aside (Cee-ala and Cham-ah-millionaire!), the producers
of this album, including a certain Wyclef Jean, is dead-set
on overwhelming dudes with its irresistible beats and infectious
rhythms. You can immerse yourself in kinetic ditties like
Get up, (When you gonna) Give it up to me, 80’s joint
and the titular Step up or take a step back and sway to ballads
such Chris Brown's Say Goodbye and Drew Sidora and Mario’s
For the Love.
The
16 tracks in this collection make for a pulsating experience,
even though everything sounds the same after a while. But
if there is ever a dance-sport video game, I suspect its music
will sound like this.
