ALBUM REVIEW:
When was the last time you listened to a compilation containing
songs performed by The Beatles? Given their renowned status
in pop history, it’s only natural that their classics
are often heard during different occasions. The soundtrack
to this British Canadian biopic about John Lennon’s
adolescence deserves special mention because it tracks the
tunes he performed (as well as the music during that era which
influenced his style of music) since the creation of his first
band, The Quarrymen.
American
rock and roll singer sets the rhythm going with the album’s
first track “Wild One”. It sets the groove of
things and makes you want to shake your hips to the beat.
The dreamy “Mr Sandman” performed by English pop
singer Dickie Valentine is a nostalgic down memory lane with
its catchy melody.
Other
well known performers like cultural icon Elvis Presley, American
singer guitarist Wanda Jackson and American rock and roll
pioneer Eddie Cochran are represented by songs like “Shake,
Rattle & Roll”, “Hard Headed Woman”
and “Twenty Flight Rock”. These songs make you
reminisce about the days when music was good old fun.
The
gems on this 41 minute album are those tracks performed by
The Qaurrymen at the time depicted in the movie. Songs like
“Maggie May”, “That’ll Be The Day”,
“That’s Alright Mamma” and “Movin’
and Groovin’” will be what fans of The Beatles
(or Lennon, for that matter) would want to include in their
music collection. If you are planning to hold a party with
a retro theme, you will want to own this soundtrack –
just get those bell bottoms ready to dance the night away.
The
album ends aptly with Lennon’s original recording of
“Mother”, a poignant dedication to both his parents,
who abandoned him in his childhood. As he croons the lyrics,
"Mother, you had me/ but I never had you"; "Father,
you left me/ but I never left you", you may just shed
a tear for this legendary musician who defined a generation
of music.
