ALBUM REVIEW:

With an album cover like that, one would expect the songs in this soundtrack to be airy fairy (is it just us who think that Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor look really lovely as a couple, with or without the adorable puppies?). But listeners would be in for a treat because of the eclectic collection of music in this compilation.

The 40 minute album is headlined by four piece multi instrumental and vocal ensemble DeVotchKa’s “I Cried Like A Silly Boy”. The flamboyance of this trippy track reminds you of the movie plot, and the psychedelic passion of love. You can almost call it a guilty pleasure. It is followed by British New Wave musical group Wang Chung’s “Dance Hall Days”, a retro tune which reminds you of the good old days of rock and roll.

Continue indulging in the mood of love with American singer Nina Simone’s big band number “To Love Somebody”, African American gospel music group Golden Gate Quratet’s enjoyable “Nobody Knows The Trouble I’ve Seen” and the talented Robert Dupree’s groovy “Steal Away”.

The soundtrack producers have thoughtfully included a few score cues on this album. Composed by Nick Urata (one of the four members in the band DeVotchKa), the music evokes different feelings, ranging from melancholy and contemplativeness to joy and merriment.

Utara, who sings and plays several instruments like theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano and trumpet in the band, manages to conjure a mental image of a couple who falls in love, faces troubles and eventually overcoming them to fall back in love again. Depending on your stomach to imagine Carrey and McGregor being partners in this relationship, the music may go either way for you (the fluorescent yellow which screams at you on the album cover also works as a double edged sword)

When the enjoyable album ends with an excerpt from the opera “The Marriage of Figaro”, you’d be thinking – is love a comedy for us to laugh at?
