SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
Director John Hamburg’s movie is about a friendless dude who goes on a series of “man dates” to find a best man for his upcoming wedding. And just as the gals have “b.f.f.”s, his friendship with his new best pal puts a strain on his relationship with his soon to be wife – how’s that for a reason to compile a mix of indie and rock tunes for a soundtrack album? And how apt is this for a wedding present for your best pal (amongst other gifts, you cheapskate) to tell him “I love you, man”?
The 49 minute disc features too cool to be true music by American singer songwriter Latch Key Kid (aka Gavin Heaney) who performs the feel good “Good Times”, indie rock band Vampire Weekend who performs the addictive “Oxford Comma”, Canadian rock band Rush’s somewhat earsplitting “Tom Sawyer” and American blue rock band The Black Keys’ equally strident “Set You Free”. If you (or the person you intend to give this CD to) are a fan of these artistes, then this is a must have soundtrack.
The list goes on with American songwriter producer singer Santogold’s chill out “Lights Out”, multi instrumentalist Beck’s heart thumping “Soul of a Man” and New Wave music rock band The Cars’ psychedelic “Let the Good Times Roll”. There are also other indie and rock gems performed by Matt Costa, The Bonedaddys, The Donnas and Dean Martin. Playing these tunes in the background on a lazy weekend afternoon would be heaven for the audiophiles. Included on the soundtrack is also a lighthearted and breezy score cue “Peter and Zooey” by Teddy Shapiro.
And a pleasant surprise comes in the form of “Limelight” performed by actors Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. The man buds in the movie have that natural chemistry (we don’t really care whether they can really sing or not, because the guitars are enough to drown out their less than powerhouse vocals) which will have you smile. Come to think of it, it’d be nice if you could include a track sung by you and your best friend – now that will really tell him “I love you, man”.
