MOVIE REVIEW:
Recap my memory: Why do I enjoy watching pre school
shows so much? Why do I get to review all the Playhouse Disney
Channel DVDs featured on the website? While I’d like
to think that it isn’t my fellow reviewers who detest
such shows, I will go on believing that I still have that
innocence to believe in the educational values of such series.
The
latest disc I’ve been assigned is a collection of three
24 minute episodes from the cable channel’s popular
series My Friends Tigger and Pooh. In the direct to DVD “Darby,
Solo Sleuth/ Doggone Buster”, the heroine of the show,
Darby, must search for soup ingredients on her own when Pooh
and Tigger have colds. In the other story, Darby loses track
of Buster and gets really worried and upset. In “Darby's
Tail/ Tigger's Delivery Service”, Darby realizes that
she lacks something her friends have - a tail. In the second
segment, Tigger starts a delivery service and is soon flooded
with assignments. He soon finds himself becoming confused
by the overflowing workload. In “Pooh-Rates of the Hundred
Acre Wood/ Tigger’s Hiccup Pickup”, Lumpy and
Roo a treasure map and they dress begin an exciting search.
In the second story, Tigger eats so quickly that he gets a
bad case of the hiccups.
That
may seem like a lot of information to pack into three episodes,
but trust us, kids enjoy them. The interactivity of the shows
will have the young ones talking to the characters in the
show, while the catchphrase (“It’s time to think,
think, think!) said by Darby and her friends will be a popular
thing amongst them. There are also rhyming songs which sound
cute and bubbly, and the obligatory 3D generated characters
to keep their eyes glued to the screen while the adults take
a break.
Kids
may have watched some of these episodes on television, but
there is this thing about them that amazes us: they continue
to be amused by the same show when you play it in the player
on a weekend afternoon. The questions at the end credits also
help to jog their memory about what they have learnt.
Sure,
no one else may want to review pre school shows like My Friends
Tigger and Pooh, but I shall continue believing that this
is an entertainingly educational show for the young ones.
At least, just like how I’ve been occupied for over
an hour, the kids can learn something along the way.
SPECIAL FEATURES :
This Code 3 DVD contains a Game Time “Darby’s
Super Sleuth Challenge” where kids need to
solve mysteries with limited clues – not too challenging
by our standards but kids should love it. A 24-minute Bonus
Episode “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Pluto’s
Puppy Sitting Adventure” is also included on
the disc. The animated series broadcast on Playhouse Disney
Channel is a joy to watch. In this particular episode, Pluto
baby sits Clarabelle Cow's puppies and realizes that they
aren't as easy to watch as he thought they would be. Also,
check out the “Sneak Peeks” section
where you can watch previews of Mickey’s Storybook Surprises
and Little Einsteins: The Legend of the Golden Pyramid.
AUDIO/VISUAL:
The disc’s visual transfer is pristine and crisp, and
there are 2.0 Stereo English, Thai, Mandarin, Cantonese, Portuguese
and Spanish audio tracks to choose from.
