SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

While reviewing this CD, we disregarded the fact that this final chapter in the Shrek franchise isn’t very good, because the soundtrack album to the movie is a truly refreshing listen. Who would have thought that someone actually thought out of the box and conceptualised this compilation of music and songs to be a… radio show?

You may find it strange that the 33 minute CD kicks off with a track named “It’s the Rumpelstiltskin Show!” Yes, you are treated to a radio show hosted by the rather repulsive Rumpelstiltskin. He tells you that he is broadcasting from Far Far Away, and that he has a special show in store for you, with music, deals and a very special studio guest. How’s that for making you sit up and listen? There’s even a radio jingle “R-M-P-L” sung by the ugly witches. Hilarious.

With interstitials like “Cupcake Party”, “Pinocchio Gets His Wish” and “Birthday Bash” written by Ryan Crego, Walt Dohrn and Gina Shay, they link the 11 songs in the album together in a cleverly witty manner. We will not give anything away in this review – you have to listen to, ahem, The Rumpelstiltskin Show, to enjoy the gags. Let’s just say many characters from Far Far Away are listening to this entertaining radio show. We wonder where Shrek and Fiona are though.

The equally entertaining songs on the CD include New York pop rock dance band Scissor Sisters’ “Isn’t It Strange”, the well loved The Carpenters’ “Top of the World” and hip hop trio Beastie Boys’ “Sure Shot”. Elsewhere, we also have bestselling American singer songwriter Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello”, British soul singer Maxine Nightingale’s “Right Back Where We Started From” and the obligatory “I’m a Believer” performed by alternative rock band Weezer.

Antonio Banderas shows off his vocals in “One Love”, and if you have watched the animated feature, you’d be chuckling at Mike Simpson’s “Shake Your Groove Thing”.

Great job, Rumpelstiltskin, for injecting a breath of fresh air into the mundane compiling of songs for a movie soundtrack. We forgive you for being ugly.
