SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

You know how certain songs define certain moments in your life - like how a Corinne Bailey Rae tune was played in the restaurant where you proposed to your girlfriend? Like how a R.E.M. song was on the airwaves when you told your boyfriend about your favourite rose colour? Like how a James Morrison song was played in the shopping centre when you received a text message from your girlfriend telling you that the relationship was over? Or like how a Keane song was playing on your mobile player when you saw your boyfriend with another girl at the park?

This very accessible soundtrack album is a collection of such definitive songs, which makes you want to put it on repeat mode on your music players at home, in the car and mp3 device.

Like the Ken Kwapis directed movie which boasts of an all star ensemble cast, this 61 minute disc contains 61 generous minutes of 17 songs performed by the who’s who of the pop music industry. Kicking off the album is English singer Colin Bailey Rae’s “I’d Like To”, which sets the mood for the entire album. American rock band R.E.M.’s “Supernatural Superserious” is a guilty pleasure if you want to holler along. Award winning English singer James Morrison’s popular “You Make It Real” is a soulfully heartbreaking tune that may make you shed a few melancholic tears if it brings about sad memories of your loved one. English piano rock band Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” features meaningful lyrics and a catchy tune that will leave you mesmerized.

Elsewhere, there are songs performed by British synthpop band The Human League (the psychedelic “Don’t You Want Me”), singer songwriter Tristan Prettywood (the girlish “Madly”), English pop duo The Ting Tings (the cheekily fun “Fruit Machine”) and Texas born alternative musician Erin McCarley (the calming “Love, Save the Empty”). There is a nice representation of music genres which will appeal to different listeners. The album hits a high with English rock band’s The Cure’s well known “Friday I’m in Love”, before ending with Scarlett Johansson’s breathy performance of “Last Goodbye”, which is also featured as a deleted scene on this enhanced CD.

Before you know it, the songs on this album may become the soundtrack of your life.
