SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

We know what you’d be thinking just by looking at the album art of this soundtrack CD: Another teen flick showcasing a geeky male lead and two hot chicks. Another soundtrack album brimming with irrelevant pop songs. Another opportunity for those Disney Channel girls (Aly Michalka and Vanessa Hudgens) to showcase their vocals. What, High School Musical wasn’t good enough an excuse?

Don’t worry, because we are assuring you that this soundtrack is a must own for all respectable music lovers. A glance through the artistes featured in this album is enough to tell you that. David Bowie, Honor Society, Seventeen Evergreen and The Velvet Underground are just some of the established musicians you’d hear on this CD. And that is before we reach the halfway mark of this 15 track album.

The 57 minute soundtrack kicks off the rhythm with Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel”, a stylistically arranged song which you will instantly fall in love with. Honor Society’s hip and youthful “Where Are You Now” is a radio friendly tune, while Seventeen Evergreen’s psychedelic electronic approach in “Lunar One” will please fans who prefer non mainstream music. When you reach The Velvet Underground & NIco’s “Femme Fatale”, we are betting that your heart would have melted with pure bliss.

Amidst these too cool to be true artistes, we are also urging you to listen out for tracks performed by the cast of this underrated Todd Graff directed music drama comedy. Scott Porter (the hero of the movie) and the Glory Dogs croon “Pretend”, an agreeable tune which echoes every lovelorn teenage boy’s sentiments. I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On, the band featured in the movie, has several outstanding songs in this CD. The Disney Channel girls are exceptionally lovely in their performances: Michalka performs the perfect and emotional “Someone to Fall Back On”, while Hudgens sings the energetic and catchy “Everything I Own”.

Do not diss this soundtrack as something you won’t be impressed with. Get a copy and experience for yourself what it is like to indulge in the magic that is music heaven.

ALBUM RATING:
