SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

When life gets you down, you can count on a Disney soundtrack to cheer you up. After the phenomenon that was High School Musical, another Disney Channel Original Movie to brighten up lives with themes of believing in yourself, following your dreams and staying true to yourself. Yeah, you know the kind of stuff we are talking about, don’t you?

Through 10 original songs on this album, listeners get 30 minutes of wholesome music spanning hip hop, pop and rock. The titular Lemonade Mouth is an ensemble of five students who bond over music after meeting in, get this, detention. The band kicks off the energetic soundtrack with the catchy “Turn Up the Music”, before becoming all uplifting and encouraging in “Somebody” and modish and hip in “Determinate”. The tunes all work fine, with heartening lyrics which are bound to get approval from the sternest parents.

Every movie needs an antagonist, and here we have a band named Mudslide Crush. They get to perform two songs on this disc – the fanatical “And the Crowd Goes” and the egoistical “Don’t Ya Wish U Were Us?”. The rock group gets to have some fun here, screaming their lungs out in a scornful fashion.

Elsewhere, there are other bouncingly lively songs from Lemonade Mouth, including the thunderous “Hear We Go”, the soothing duet “More Than A Band” and the infectious “Breakthrough” (this one has a creepy resemblance to Rebecca Black’s “Friday”). To complete the platter, there’s also “She’s So Gone” which oozes girl power, and “Livin’ on a High Wire”, a tune that goes well with pyrotechnics and bright spotlights on stage.

The performers’ names would only ring a bell if you were an ardent follower of Disney Channel’s programmes. Bridgit Mendler, Adam Hicks, Hayley Kiyoko and Naomi Scott headline this music driven movie, belting out radio friendly songs which will resonate with young people everywhere. The only problem is, will any of them become a Zac Efron or Vanessa Hudgens any time soon?
