SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

It is difficult not to feel the fervour and energy when a CD opens with English alternative dance group The Prodigy’s “Stand Up”. The passionate synthesizer tune, the upbeat tempo and the edgy rhythm almost make you want to… kick some ass! Yes, how very apt for this soundtrack album for the Matthew Vaughn directed movie to kick off the mood with such a vigorous track. Be prepared – because more such cues are coming up to complement the superhero movie based on the comic book of the same name.

Next we have the title song “Kick Ass” performed by popular singer songwriter Mika, co written by Jodi Marr and produced by famed Moroccan Swedish music producer RedOne. And from what we’ve read, this duo’s collaboration will blow your mind away with its uniquely incredible and astonishing sounds. Those who are familiar with Mika’s previous albums Life in Cartoon Motion (2007) and The Boy Who Knew Too Much (2009) will enjoy this song thoroughly. For even more kicks, check out the inspired music video where the singer kicks some ass after being attacked in the alleyway. Cool stuff.

Elsewhere, expect to pump up the volume of your player with Scottish alternative rock group Primal Scream’s gruffly raucous “Can’t Go Back”, Los Angeles based indie rock band The Little Ones’ sway inducing “There’s A Pot Brewin’” and New York based post grunge band The Pretty Reckless’ loudly strident “Make Me Wanna Die”.

Always welcome in song compilation soundtracks, memorable quotes from the movie are included on this 51 minute album. But beware not to play them too loudly in front of your younger siblings because they contain quite a bit of, err, profanities (hence the parental advisory of explicit content on the disc cover). But trust us, these quotes are as cool as hell.

The adventure continues with a great lineup of great tracks performed by artistes like American punk rock group The Dickies, English singer songwriter Ellie Goulding and instrument group Zongamin. In addition, the soundtrack is cool enough to include famed Italian composer Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti music cue “Per Qualche Dollaro In Piu” and the legendary Elvis Presely’s vintage song “An American Trilogy”.

When the album ends with a quote from the movie “Show’s over, xxxx”, we heave a sigh of exhilaration because it felt really good listening to the 14 kick ass music tracks in this album.
