SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

With scores from critically-panned movies like The Pacifier, Chicken Little and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 under your resume, you won’t think that composer John Debney would be recognized for his talents (this reviewer genuinely enjoyed Chicken Little’s soundtrack though). But the Oscar nominee (The Passion of the Christ) does produce works that are pleasing to the ear and this latest score from the critically-panned (again!) movie does prove that point.

This disc contains 49 minutes of original score material (as opposed to the song compilation album released earlier), and is accessibly likeable. Opening the album is a very grand “The Ark Theme”, which introduces listeners to the kind of music they can expect from the rest of the soundtrack. The lively and majestic theme evokes images of, well, a gigantic ark.

Another noteworthy aspect of this enjoyable album is the use of an impressive chorus in tracks like “Hummer Ride” and “Take It Down”. The Page LA Studio voices lend a very appropriately holy tone to the entire soundtrack. A standout solo choral voice featured in “God’s Theme” is distinctively saintly and divine to listen to.

Elsewhere, there are the obligatory piano melodies in cues like “Evan’s Theme” and “Evan and God” which are easily likeable. Then there are the bombastically loud moments in cues like “Evan Runs from Capitol” and the lengthy “The Flood”, which runs at seven minutes long. It is almost a cue of god-like proportions, complete with big numbers, grand orchestrations and a strongly backed-up chorus.

ALBUM RATING:

Recommended Track: (3) Evan's Theme
