SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
Whoever expected German-born Hans Zimmer to compose such a
light-hearted score for such a fluffy chick flick? After all,
he is the man responsible for the adrenaline-pumped scores
for movies such as Black Hawk Down (2001), King Arthur (2004),
and most recently, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s
End.
This
just shows how versatile the composer is.
Although
only two out the 22 tracks are solely composed by Zimmer himself,
the rest of the 48-minute album fares well with cues co-written
by his teammates like Lorne Baife, Henry Jackman and Heitor
Pereira.
Opening
the soundtrack is Zimmer’s own composition “Maestro”,
which is positively upbeat, and will perk up your senses on
any lazy day. The other Zimmer piece “Definitely Unexpected”
breathes a sense of melancholy with its flowing strings and
occasional xylophones.
Elsewhere,
there are playful tracks like “Kayak For One”,
jazzy pieces like “For Nancy” and warm interludes
like “Kiss Goodbye” which complement the different
moods of the holiday movie nicely. The non heavy-duty orchestrations
are easy to digest, with violins, violas, celli, clarinets,
flutes and oboes freely playing the spirited melodies.
Romantic
die-hards will love “Verso E Prosa”, a laidback
piece which demands to be played at all candlelight dinners.
Yes, all guys who want to impress their dates, this is one
track you’d want to loop at your first dinner outing.
There
may not be any memorable cues that will stick in your mind,
and the overall music for this soundtrack album may not be
anything superbly outstanding, it is still a breezy and stress-free
listening experience – perfect for any weekend at home.
