Nicole
Kidman did it. Renee Zellweger did it. Catherine Zeta-Jones
joined in the fun too. Now we have Meryl Streep and Lindsay
Lohan following suit. We
are talking about Hollywood actresses contributing their voices
to soundtracks. And truth be told, we love it – a lot.
In the
great Robert Altman’s (The Company, Gosford Park) last
film before dying in November last year, he gathered a wonderful
ensemble of actors to put up a show at the last broadcast
of America’s popular radio show “A Prairie Home
Companion”. While it is a shame our local audiences
never got to catch this musical on the big screen, we are
glad that we got our hands on this soundtrack album.
Featuring
64 fun-filled minutes of music from the movie, this is a must-have
in any respected soundtrack collector’s CD rack. The
mixture of superb songs, creative advertisement jingles and
cheery musical interludes plays like an excellent record,
and you’d be merrily agree with us that it is one of
the most accessibly engaging soundtracks you’d heard
for a long time.
Listen
out for the many duets characterized with the exceptionally
pleasant voices of Streep and Lily Tomlin (Tea with Mussolini,
I Heart Huckabees), who play singing sisters. Lohan performs
a single track “Frankie and Johnny”, where the
youth in her voice nicely complements the other more seasoned
voices.
Providing
the hoot factor are John C. Reilly (Chicago, The Hours) and
Woody Harrelson (Natural Born Killers, A Scanner Darkly),
who play singing cowboys. Their best performance has to be
“Bad Jokes”, where the crooning duo cracks you
up with silly ridiculous jokes. You might just want to try
out one at your next party: “What did the elephant say
to the naked man?” “Can you really breathe through
that?”
With
a nice variation of music genres like jazz, blues and country,
this is one movie soundtrack that needs no visuals for enjoyment
- a great companion indeed.
