REVIEW

When Bryan Singer decided to give up X-Men: The Last Stand to direct Superman Returns, he brought his composer John Ottman along with him to score the movie. Fear not, because John Powell was roped in to take over the baton for this summer superhero blockbuster, and trust us, he has given us one exhilarating listening experience.

Unlike the previous two X-Men scores, this one shamelessly makes sure that the movie’s main music theme sticks in your head. Loud brasses and pounding percussions will have your heart thumping by the album’s second track “Bathroom Titles”. This theme is repeatedly played over the soundtrack’s total running time of over 60 minutes.

There are quieter moments in the album too, featuring graceful strings and beautiful oboe solos in tracks like “Jean and Logan” and “Skating on the Pond”. The highlights of this score are the tremendously affecting tracks “Dark Phoenix’s Tragedy” and “Phoenix Rises”. The music soars to a dramatic level with the orchestra’s full performance. Your sense will reach another level as well, with the majestic tune ringing in your ears. Choir voices are also generously utilized throughout the album to excellent effects.

It has taken three different composers to score the three X-Men films, and Powell has grandiosely brought this franchise to a magnificent end. Never mind that the film did not please every X-Men comic fan - this soundtrack score is definitely a must to own if you are into bombastic high-paced action music balanced with some nice touches of elegance. If there is one young composer to look out for this year, it is Powell, who has given us the wacky score to Ice Age: The Meltdown and will also compose the somber soundtrack for the upcoming United 93. Like a superhero, we sure hope this well-diversified composer will soar to great heights in his music career.
