ALBUM REVIEW:

Depending on your taste for classical music, the soundtrack will either enchant you to tears, or to put it blandly, have no effect on you.

Boasting a generous number of 27 tracks and a total runtime of 73 minutes, the disc contains 11 of French national icon Edith Piaf’s original performances, some 20-odd minutes of original score material from the film by Christopher Gunning and other singers’ covers of Piaf’s song.

We truly appreciate the soundtrack producers’ efforts to put together this charming mix of music on one disc.

The first chapter of this album delights you with Piaf’s excellent and charismatic vocals. Never mind the recording isn’t crystal clear – you can almost imagine the beloved French singer performing to a large crowd in a huge concert hall with countless pairs of mesmerized eyes on her. It’s the perfect picture to paint in your mind.

The second chapter of the album introduces us to Gunning’s soothing score for Olivier Dahan’s film. Showcasing piano solos, soft woodwinds and luscious strings, listeners can expect an emotionally calming experience.

The last chapter includes seven tracks of additional songs performed by other artistes. Listen out for the delicate “Les Momes De La Cloche” sung by Jil Aigrot and the catty “Fascination” interpreted by Maya Barsoni for the best bits in this section.

If you don’t already know by now, most of the tunes here are performed in French, and we’d suppose that most of you out there do not fully understand the language. But the power of music is universal; let this soundtrack take you on a enthralling musical journey you’d never forget.
