REVIEW
Billed as more of a ‘musical scrapbook’ of some
of the songs featured and written exclusively for the award
winning TV series, volume two of the Grey’s Anatomy
original soundtrack will prove to be a hit with its fans waiting
anxiously for the Season 3 installment.
At
first glance, the compilation boasts a varied musical selection
and seemingly made for fans of varied and eclectic musical
taste, which spans numerous genres and styles (from rock and
psychedelic pop to electronic jazz). Sadly, more than half
the album sounds grossly similar (quite a few are even in
the same key!) and can be easily summarised by the first and
last track, “How to save a life” by The Fray,
and Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars”. But these
two are great songs in their own right and it is a wonder
why the outstanding original version of the latter made popular
in the series was not included.
That
being said, the album does feature some notable and deserving
musical acts. Psychedelic pop star Jim Noir shines with “I
Me You”, as do Jamie Lidell with his electronic Jazz
hit “Multiply” and Ursula 1000 with their uniquely,
distinctive and toe-tapping fun “Kaboom!” Even
irritating saccharine pseudo-alternative rock refreshes the
soundtrack with the inclusion of their “Sexy Mistake”.
The only song written specially for the series, “Grace”
by Kate Havnevik is an important, lovely and melancholic song
but she sounds way too much like Björk.
The
producers confessed that it was not possible to include all
the songs used in the second season. This is obviously due
to the bias towards more sellable alternative rock tracks.
This is a pity as more impressive new and non-mainstream music
could have been included, which would have made this a great
album.
