ALBUM REVIEW:
This Adam Brooks-directed movie is about a man who reflects
on how he has lived his life during the midst of a divorce
with his wife. Like him, each of us has got stories to tell:
stories about past romances, stories about past achievements,
stories about past regrets, stories about how we have gotten
to where we are today. And each of these stories is accompanied
by a song that defines those moments. In this 57-minute soundtrack
album, there may be such songs that tell these stories of
your life.
This compilation
of songs contains tunes performed by popular artistes like
American rock band R.E.M., English trip hop band Massive Attack,
legendary American soul singer Otis Redding and indie singer-songwriter
Badly Drawn Boy. This generous palette of songs has something
from everyone, from the catchy “Everyday People”
by Sly and the Family Stone kicking off the lightweight album,
to the likeable “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt
1” (don’t you just love an innovative title like
that?) by The Flaming Lips and the hip-hop “People Everyday”
by Arrested Development.
For a
movie about heartbreaks and reunions, there are surprisingly
no melancholic songs in this soundtrack. But that is not to
say that these songs are not meaningful and poignant. Songs
like Stereo MC’s “Connected” and Belle &
Sebastian’s “The Boy With The Arab Strap”
reflects some of your deepest sentiments while sounding contemporarily
interesting. Included as the last track is Clint Mansell’s
(Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain) brief cue entitled “Definitely
Maybe Suite”. Because of the songs before it, this track
made up of short tunes from the score of the movie does not
leave much of an impression.
This
may just be the soundtrack of your life. Out of the 13 songs,
one of them may just be the defining song of your life. Is
this soundtrack a hit? Maybe. Is it a likeable compilation?
Definitely.
