ALBUM REVIEW:

To tell the truth, I am quite sick of animated figures staring at the audience and giving us the all-knowing look, like we are all privy to some insider joke or the like. I put the blame for this kiddy-adult semi-mature animation trend squarely on Shrek’s shoulder, and there is no shirking from responsibility this time for the ogre.

So how do you up the animaturation stakes and differentiate yourself from the goofy cousins? You get beautiful and quirky people like Shia Labeouf, Zooey Deschanels and Jon Heder to voice the cuties. Never mind the fact that I would rather see them act in person. Oh, another thing, do the same for your soundtrack as well.

I never expect to hear Incubus’ Drive in a movie soundtrack after all this while, much less from an animation involving surfing penguins and a rooster. Featuring all-new tracks from solid but almost-forgotten acts like Lauryn Hill, Sugar Ray, New Radicals, Ken Andrews and Pearl Jam, Surf’s Up is a compilation you can actually buy because of the artistes involved and nothing to do with the capering birds.

ALBUM RATING:

Recommended Track: (8) “Into Yesterday” – Sugar Ray
