REVIEW

It is hard not to be star-struck just by looking at the lineup of this album. Let’s see there is Bruce Springsteen, Andrea Bocelli, Yo-Yo Ma, and even Celine “My Heart Is Still Going On and On” Dion?

It sounds like a perfect ensemble for a tribute concert. And the 70-minute album sure plays out like one.

Featuring 17 tracks put together as a tribute to Italian composer Ennio Morricone, individual performances are seamlessly segued together. One moment you are listening to Dion’s soaring vocals on “I Knew I Loved You”, before you are transported to Morricone’s signature spaghetti western tune in “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. After which comes Springsteen’s soulful guitar performance in the Morricone classic “Once Upon a Time in the West”, which transits nicely into Bocelli’s beautiful tenor voice in “Conradiana”. Just before you think things cannot get any more exciting, rock band Metallica jams things up with “The Ecstacy of Gold”.

And that’s only the first 20-odd minutes of the ride.

The maestro was awarded an honorary award at the recent Oscars for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music. Watching him recite his thank-you speech in Italian, it is definite that young punks today have a lot to learn from this master of art. Judging by the applause from those present at the award ceremony, we are sure that being humble and being able to earn your due respect is an art by itself.

For fans of classical and more refined music, listen out for the lush “Malena” featuring acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, as well as the moving “Gabriel’s Oboe” which showcases one of the most expressive oboe solos we have ever heard on any album.

This disc definitely deserves a place on any self-respecting score fan’s shelf. And also anyone who has a penchant for music as an art form.
