SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

The soundtrack to Nicholas Stoller’s hilarious movie about a lovesick TV music composer who gets dumped by his actress girlfriend is a diverse collection of songs which lovesick listeners will adore. In the movie, our hero goes to Hawaii only to find the girl and her new rock star boyfriend are, alas, staying at the same hotel.

What’s a lovesick guy like him to do in times like this? Listen to this 52-minute album of course.

Kicking off the disc is California band CAKE’s “Love You Madly” which captures the protagonist’s burning desire to love his girlfriend aptly. The spot on track is radio friendly and catchy, so it should have no problem making its way to your mobile music player. Then we have a band specially created for the movie named Infant Sorrow (the lead singer is the girl’s new boyfriend). The group performs “We’ve Got to do Something” and “Inside of You” on this album, which are typically pop tunes which are accessible but forgettable. Other songs integrated nicely into the movie are the off key but amusing “Dracula’s Lament” performed by Jason Segel (the actor who plays the out of luck composer) and the operatic “A Taste for Love” by the cast of the movie.

The track which tickles us the most is indie alternative duo The Bird and the Bee’s “F*****g Boyfriend”. The electro pop tune plays out in its unedited glory on this album, which earns a “Parental Advisory – Explicit Content” label on the disc’s cover.

The Hawaiian backdrop of the movie is nicely captured in tracks like Aloha Sex Juice’s “More Than Words”, The Coconutz’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Everybody Hurts”. These familiar tunes are performed with simple “oohs” and “aahs” by the bands with a fitting laid back and relaxed mood – these songs will make any heartbreak more bearable.
