SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
As bright and cheery the soundtrack album cover sleeve looks,
the music definitely isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
The
41-minute soundtrack for the movie about love and culinary
skills contains a substantial amount of opera music which
may appeal to the more artistic. Check out Italian tenor Luciano
Pavarotti’s ever-favorite “Nessun Dorma”,
Italy post-war’s beloved soprano Renata Tebaldi’s
“O Mio Babbino Caro” and Australian dramatic soprano’s
“Libiamo Libiamo”. Each of these tunes may be
sung in an unfamiliar language, but the mood and class evoked
in each one is uniquely different.
For
those who love more contemporary tunes, there’s always
Michael Buble’s overplayed “Sway” and the
most accessible and radio friendly track on the disc, Liz
Phair’s “Count On My Love”.
There
are also two very brief score tracks composed by Oscar-nominated
Philip Glass which do not leave much of an impression. These
tunes are somewhat less depressing and heavy compared to his
compositions for dramatic films like The Hours and Notes on
a Scandal.
Elsewhere,
your senses will be perked up by “Via Con Me”
and “Mambo Gelato”, two tunes that will make for
great dinner music. Besides impressing your guests with the
classy selection of music in this refined album, you’d
have to cook up a wicked spread of simmering dishes accompanied
by lip-smacking sauces and seasoning.
