SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

We are convinced that Michael Giacchino is one of the up and coming composers to look, and for this matter, listen out for. The New Jersey born Oscar nominee first caught our attention with his energetic score for The Incredibles (2004). Then thanks to J.J. Abrams, he went on to score prominent Hollywood projects like Mission: Impossible III (2006), while continuing his ominous work on TV’s Lost. Before you can say O-S-C-A-R, he got his first Academy Award nomination in 2007 with Disney/ Pixar’s Ratatouille. And at the recent 81st Academy Awards, he is the man conducting the orchestra. What a ride, we hear you say, And his work for The Wachowski Brothers’ live action adaptation of the popular anime series is as exciting as his career in recent years.

The first thing that pleases us about this album is its generous 60 minute runtime. The music for this adrenaline filled movie is as zippy as you can imagine. Expect never ending zest, extreme quantities of jazzy music and a rip roaring tempo that will excite your senses, even without the colourful visuals which left many critics unfazed.

The 37 second “I Am Speed” introduces you to a world of boundless energy, and from there on, tracks like “Thunderhead”, “Casa Cristo”, “Vroom and Board” and “Bumper to Bumper, Rail to Rail” are fine examples of snazzy oomph translated into music notes. Before you complain that there are no places for you to breathe in this well produced soundtrack album, you may want to check out cues like “Racing’s in our Blood” and “Let Us Drink Milk”. These two are the standout heartfelt compositions in this otherwise hyperactive soundtrack.

Can’t wait to listen for the catchy “Go, Speed Racer, Go” main theme? Fret not, this tune is nicely interweaved into many of the tracks, before it presents itself in full glory in the final cue “Speed Racer”. The different variations and moods of this popular theme definitely showcase Giacchino’s talent and versatility. We’re behind you all the way, dude.
