SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

Fifty four minutes. Thirty two tracks. We are warning you first: This soundtrack album is definitely not for the faint hearted. If you are looking for melodious orchestrations, joyous celebratory music or lush scores, please search elsewhere. As the movie title aptly indicates, the underscore for this Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor directed action extravaganza will be, err, of high voltage. California born composer Mike Patton not only composed the music for the Jason Stratham vehicle, he also performs on this niche album.

The first cue of the disc “Kickin” gives you a flavour of what’s to come for the next 31 cues. Patton belts out some incomprehensible lyrics (at least to the average listener) and he does it later in “Sweet Cream (Redux)” – but you’d go along for the ride anywhere, especially if you are in the mood to vent your anger on something. This CD will be the perfect companion for you to fantasise yourself as a gun waving hit man who destroys anyone and anything that comes in your way.

The rest of the disc contains brief but powerful music that will shake your gentle nerves quite a bit. With interesting track titles like “Chickenscratch”, “Tourettes Breakdance” and “Porn Strike”, you can expect the listening experience to be similarly interesting (especially if you are used to the usual sounds of music). This album is no stroll in the park, and all you need to do is to listen to the one minute “Juice Me” – you’ll be left dumbfounded by the energetic vigour that may leave the weak hearted gasping for air.

The heavy funk, hip hop and rock and roll influences are evident in the soundtrack’s heart thumping rhythms, which we suppose only someone like the talented and diversified Patton can come up with. And if you really must know, the front man of alternative metal bands Faith No More and Mr. Bungle provides the voice of Mixmaster, a Decepticon in the upcoming summer blockbuster Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. And how he warps his voice (like he did in this soundtrack), we’ve got to hear.
