REVIEW
The
Borat soundtrack “Stereophonic Musical Listenings That
Have Been Origin in Moving Film” is an absolute cracker.
It combines authentic Eastern European music, Balkan remixes,
some movie dialogue and Sacha Baron Cohen’s very twisted
creations into an exceptional soundtrack that is coherent
and original.
Sacha’s
brother, Erran, headlined the project and created the mock
national anthem O Kazakhstan and my personal favourite, the
getai-styled You Be My Wife. Sacha himself is responsible
for the other diabolical track, In the Country There Is Problem
(Throw the Jew down the Well). These songs may have outrageous
R21 content, but they are really quite catchy ditties.
The
music on offer is so rich that it made the Borat theme tune
Eu Vin Acasa Cu Drag sound somewhat pedestrian. Lending credibility
to the soundtrack are Skopje gypsy Esma Redzepova’s
Chaje Shukarije, Romanian gypsy band Fanfare Ciocarlia, Macedonia
ensemble Kocani Orkestar and Bulgaria gypsy Jony Iliev. O.M.F.O
and Shantel offered some infectious remixes while Sarajevo
handsome Goran Bregovic’s epic soundscape Ederlezi is
worth a few spins.
This
album may not make in to the office playlist anytime soon,
but Sacha’s wonderful fusion of hysterical satire with
real Eastern European culture turned a fictitious reality
into something that is eminently heartfelt and loveable.
