SYNOPSIS:

Oscar winning actor Sean Penn, two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law, four-time Academy Award nominee Kate Winslet and Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins star in this riveting story of a humble man's rise to political power and the destructive force of corruption and betrayal that would ultimately unravel his soul based on Robert Penn Warren's 1946 classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

MOVIE REVIEW:

All The King’s Men is supposed to be an award-winning film from acclaimed director Steven Zaillian and a high-power cast of Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Anthony Hopkins, James Gandolfini, Mark Ruffalo and Patricia Clarkson. These dudes have more awards, including Oscars, between them than I can count; but this movie went on to garner a 11% rating on the Tomatometer. What went wrong?

Basically a tale of mismanaged expectations. With the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel as the film’s narrative bedrock and a running time of 128 minutes, Steven Zaillian contrived to under-whelm with central characters Willie Stark (Sean Penn) and Jack Burden (Jude Law). I had no idea if there was any moment of reflection for Stark amidst his meteoric rise from backwater traveling salesman to explicitly corrupt demagogue, and Jack’s back-story was unbelievable the moment Kate Winslet was cast as the love of his life. I heart Kate Winslet, but her hair looked phony to me in every single second of her screen time.

Watch this movie, though, to see another stunning larger-than life performance from Sean Penn and a very scene-stealing Patricia Clarkson. At the same time, think of how much better this could have been.
