A
fun, spontaneous rap session by actors Ben Yeung and Xavier
Teo liven up the mood of an otherwise generic press conference.
Attended by the main cast and director, Kelvin Tong, the
group was on a promotional trip to Penang and KL the day
before. Despite a hectic, rushed journey, the crew remains
upbeat and jovial throughout.
Leading
man Shaun Chen who has appeared in numerous TV serials
and the current beau of TV host Michelle Chia has the
honour of playing badminton in the middle of the night
which of course is for his debut shoot as a badminton
player turn ghost in “Men in White”.
He
revealed that he’s most looking forward to playing
a gay or a mob boss and the fast shooting pace (as compared
to a TV serial) of a movie is what he needs to get used
to.
Director
Kelvin Tong who has helmed the successful horror thriller
“The Maid” feels that the main reason why
he venture into the “mo lei tau” (In Cantonese
slang which means nonsensical humour) genre is that
youngsters have the misconception that local movies
are make for the older viewers which is why he intends
to target the younger audience, luring them to theaters
to watch his “Men in White” despite the
heated summer blockbuster competition.
While it’s inevitable to lose some of the audience
crowd but as the man himself puts it, “The wider
you go, the blander you get”.
Looks like Kelvin is basking in all the fun during the
shoot as he patiently describes the ultra-boring task
of setting up the camera and lighting just to shoot
a long, dark corridor for a typical horror movie whereas
the energy level while shooting a comedy is entirely
different.
You might have noticed one very
familiar figure in most of Kelvin Tong’s productions;
the person is none other than Benjamin Heng (his leading
man in “Eating Air”). It seem that for every
weird role Kelvin has, the first person he reached out
to call will be Benjamin.
With
a strong supporting cast, which includes veteran actress
Alice Lim, upcoming actress Ling Lee, newcomer David
Aw (MIW talent search winner) and “hip-hop rappers”
duo, Xavier Teo and Ben Yeung. Kelvin and his group
of merry men are here to make the young audience laugh.
Pressure? Looks like it’s far from Kelvin.

"Men In White" haunts cinemas islandwide
6 June 2007 and is reviewed here!
