SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:

It’s been a year since the soundtrack to Roystan Tan’s "getai" movie 881 has been blasting faithfully on your player –it’s time replace it with this album featuring 71 generous minutes of music from Tan’s second film in his "getai" duo-logy. And we can promise you, it’s going to be campier, kitschier and an even guiltier pleasure this time round.

Get into the mood of things with the disc’s first two startling tracks "12 Lotus (2nd Verse)" and "12 Lotus (3rd Verse)/ Steady Already". The strong techno tempo unabashedly sets the mood of the entire album, and you know it’s not going to be a tranquil and serene musical experience.

This album’s "Ah Beng Ah Lian" nature is wonderfully expressed in tracks like the romantic "Ah Long Ah Hua", the pleasurable "Little Umbrella" and the delightful "Good Times/ Bad Times". Even if you haven’t watched the colorful movie, you can picture these songs playing against elaborately choreographed dance numbers. It’s a feast to the ears – except that the songs are performed in the very colloquial Hokkien dialect. If songs like that are not your cup of tea, there are also radio friendly songs like "Royal Flush", "Stranded" and "Love Fools" which are potential tracks to include in your 'listen when feeling down' play list.

The album features performances by an interesting variety of artistes, ranging from the movie’s stars Liu Ling Ling (she is a hoot to listen to) and Lee Bao En (a newcomer who deserves her place in the 'getai' industry), Funkie Monkie’s pride and honor Ngak, to the director himself. And we must say Tan isn’t too bad a singer himself.

And if you must, memorize the lines in the detailed lyrics booklet that comes with the soundtrack, and you’ll be singing along to the very likable tunes for a while – at least till another soundtrack of this nature comes along.
