SYNOPSIS:
Murphy
stars as mild-mannered Norbit, who gets a second chance at
love with his childhood sweetheart, Kate. But there's one
huge obstacle: jealous, mean-tempered Rasputia, who wants
Norbit all to her sizeable self. Can Norbit win the heart
of Kate... before Rasputia puts the hurt on him?
MOVIE REVIEW:
Two things to note before we begin: This movie is not titled
“Hysterically Funny” as shown on the cover (on
the left) but called “Norbit”.
Secondly,
for those easily offended by colour jokes, fat woman with
fat boobs jokes, fart jokes and sexual humor, please steer
clear of it. Otherwise, you are safe to proceed.
For
a start, I have nothing against funny, satirical or even dumb
movies such as “Date Movie”. In fact I chuckled
and choked a few times in the latter. But for poor “Norbit”,
it’s a one-trick pony by the once funny Eddie Murphy.
After just 15 minutes of screentime, the jokes stated above
ran out-of-steam faster than a derailed locomotive. And how
do they sustain a 100 minutes movie? Easy. They press the
repeat button.
Employing
the services of Makeup master Rick Baker yet again, Murphy
is transformed to Mr Wong (the racist boss of the Golden Wonton
orphanage), the menacing Rasputia and of course Norbit. Unlike
the weak but entertaining “The Nutty Professor II”,
Murphy has to work on a flimsy script and despite his numerous
incarnations, can’t solely save this piece of work.
Well, Murphy has to blame himself too because he’s also
one of the credited writers and producer.
To
make matters worse, we have talents such as Thandie Newton
(Mission Impossible II), Cuba Gooding Jr (the Academy Award
apparently doesn’t help) and Eddie Griffin, Marlon Wayans
to fill up the supporting cast. And yet it just doesn’t
work.
I
missed that talented Eddie Murphy in “Coming to America”.
That Eddie Murphy who doesn’t resort to cheap jokes
and unsightly gags.
"Norbit" is strictly for fans of non-stop colour
jokes, fat woman with fat boobs jokes, fart jokes and sexual
humor.
