SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940 - 2026)

Following a brief and poignant battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, Sir Patrick Stewart died on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, aged 86.

After a series of roles in British film and television in the 1960s, Stewart made his U.S. film debut in John Boorman’s King Arthur epic Excalibur (1981), followed by an appearance in David Lynch’s cult sci-fi classic Dune (1984). He rose to international fame as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, appearing in over 170 episodes of the sci-fi television series between 1987 and 1994. He subsequently reprised the role in four feature films before returning to the character in Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023).

Younger audiences will forever remember Stewart as Professor X in the X-Men franchise, beginning with the 2000 superhero film X-Men, alongside fellow acting knight Sir Ian McKellen. His final screen appearance is set to be in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Rest well, Sir Patrick. Live long and prosper.
