Renowned Hong Kong film producer Nansun Shi has passed away at the age of 75 following complications related to an immune system illness.
Shi began her producing career in the early 1980s at the now-defunct Cinema City before co-founding Film Workshop with her then-husband, director Tsui Hark, in 1984. Under the banner, she produced some of Hong Kong cinema’s most celebrated films, including the A Better Tomorrow series, Peking Opera Blues, and the Once Upon a Time in China franchise.
In 2002, Media Asia chairman Peter Lam recruited Shi as the company’s vice chairman. Alongside Andrew Lau and John Chong, she produced the acclaimed crime thriller Infernal Affairs. She later collaborated with Beijing-based Bona Film Group on the Overheard thriller trilogy.
Although Shi and Tsui Hark eventually divorced, they maintained a close professional partnership. Her final credited production was Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants (2025), directed by Tsui.
In recognition of their immense contributions to Hong Kong cinema, Shi and Tsui were jointly presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards last year.
