SWAPPED (NETFLIX) (2026)

SYNOPSIS: Swapped is a buddy comedy about a small woodland creature, voiced by Academy Award winner Michael B. Jordan, and a majestic bird (Juno Temple). When these two natural sworn enemies of The Valley suddenly swap bodies, they must team up, while walking in each other’s feathers and fur, to survive the wildest adventure of their lives.

MOVIE REVIEW:

This year’s Best Actor winner, Michael B. Jordan, voices Ollie, an otter-like creature known as a Pookoo in this wildly imaginative animated film Swapped.

Ollie lives with his parents and grandmother in a place called the Valley. It was once a beautiful land where everyone lived in harmony, thanks to the blessing of the Dzos, gigantic, tree-like creatures that carry glowing magical pods with the power to transform animals into other species. However, peace is shattered when an evil Firewolf destroys the trees and throws the Valley into chaos.

Ollie soon befriends a young Javan bird and teaches her how to find food. But things take a dark turn when his home is attacked by Javans, who seize their land and food supply. Years later, Ollie accidentally transforms himself into a Javan. Alongside another Javan named Ivy (Juno Temple), he must set aside old differences, form an unlikely bond, and confront the Firewolf to protect the Valley they both call home.

Swapped carries a clear body-switching element reminiscent of Freaky Friday, though it’s best left to viewers to discover how it unfolds. The story credited to John Whittington, Christian Magalhaes, and Robert Snow is surprisingly heartfelt and often funny. As a family-friendly film, it delivers plenty of positive messages, along with a few tense and action-packed moments to keep audiences engaged.

What really stands out, however, is the impressive character design. With the exception of the Pookoos, many of the creatures—deer, bears, and snakes are imaginative hybrids of trees, plants, and animals. While it’s unclear how much influence former Disney talents like director Nathan Greno and John Lasseter (now heading Skydance Animation) had on the overall aesthetic, Swapped certainly carries the familiar charm of a Disney-Pixar-style production.

Tracy Morgan and Cedric the Entertainer also lend their voices, adding extra personality to the film. Overall, the story is breezy and vibrant enough for both children and adults to enjoy. Considering the success of animal-themed animations like Zootopia 2 and Hoppers, Swapped stands as a decent and enjoyable entry in the streaming market, just don’t expect a top-tier masterpiece.
