KOKUHO CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF SINGAPORE-JAPAN FRIENDSHIP

As part of the SJ60 celebrations marking 60 years of Singapore–Japan diplomatic relations and the 100th edition of JCC Cinema, Shaw Theatres, together with the Singapore Film Society and Japan Creative Centre, presented a special screening of Kokuho on 18 July.

Held at the newly renovated Lido 1, the event welcomed more than 20 ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from embassies, high commissions and consulates across Singapore, alongside distinguished guests, industry partners and film enthusiasts.

The screening opened with welcome addresses by His Excellency Ishikawa Hiroshi, Ambassador of Japan to Singapore, and Mr Kenneth Tan, Chairman of the Singapore Film Society, who both expressed their excitement at bringing this celebrated work of Japanese cinema to Singapore audiences.

Before the film began, Ms Yow Wei Ming, a Kabuki enthusiast and speaker, introduced audiences to the rich traditions of Kabuki theatre. Her engaging presentation offered valuable insights into the centuries-old art form, providing viewers with cultural context that enriched their appreciation of the film's story, characters and artistry.

Guests were then treated to Kokuho ahead of its exclusive theatrical release at Shaw Theatres from 23 July.

Directed by Japanese filmmaker Lee Sang-il, Kokuho stars Ryo Yoshizawa, Ryusei Yokohama, Mitsuki Takahata and Ken Watanabe in an epic story set against the world of Kabuki. The film has become one of Japan's biggest live-action box office successes, grossing more than ¥20 billion (approximately S$160 million) and setting a new domestic box office record for a live-action Japanese film.

Critically acclaimed, Kokuho received 17 nominations at this year's Japan Academy Film Prize, winning 10 awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. It was also selected as Japan's submission for the Academy Awards' Best International Feature Film category and earned a nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
