Review:
Seed
of Chucky is the type of trashy film that you can’t
help but enjoy. It’s campy, the plot is filled with
loopholes and has an uneven flow. But if you are a fan of
Chucky (maybe that the reason why you are still interested
to read this review), you will still want to watch this film
for entertainment, degraded, perverse, sardonic and even to
the extent of vulgar elements that have always been present
in the Chucky Franchise.
This
next step of the Chucky Franchise after the Bride of Chucky
is naturally (or in this case, unnaturally) Chucky’s
Offing. By now, the Lord of the Ring (LOTR) Die-Hard fans
would know that Chucky Junior is played by the LOTR alumni,
Billy Boyd. He is pretty good in his role as the confused
child of Chucky but one of my major complaints about his role
is that he stole too much screen time from Chucky. And besides
Chucky and his Bride, Tiffany, he just doesn’t feel
right in this franchise. So pardon me, LOTR loyalists, I hope
I don’t see him again in Chucky’s next film.
Playing
the dual role of Tiffany voice and as herself, Jennifer Tilly
stole most of the limelight from the other cast, even Chucky
himself, as she constantly dug sarcastic remarks at herself
and her acting career going downhill. However her perky dumb
bimbo portrayal made her seem rather endearing to me. Like
what Redman said in this film, I have become a big fan of
her huge huge talent too.
Last
but not Least, Chucky! (While doing a search, I realize that
Brad Dourif, the voice of Chucky is also one of the LOTR alumni.
They are spawning everywhere!) It was nice to see one of my
favourite horror icon characters back in action. However,
I am not sure if Chucky is right for fatherhood. What the
heck, I don’t even think he should have gotten married
in the first place!
All
these family matters seem to bog him down with unnecessary
concerns. I was secretly wishing that he would slay his ugly
looking spawn during the film but I guess Chucky had taken
pills for his crazy killer instinct and became more fatherly.
That will prove to be a Fatal Mistake! ARGH!
Are
you still with me so far? Well there is no new breakthrough
in horror here, just the same old “unexpected appearance
of slasher”. Even the concept of a film presenting a
film production felt like it was borrowed from Scary Movie
3 and Freddy’s New Nightmare.
For
a horror film, it’s quite tame. Even the body count
is rather low and you can easily count with one hand. This
film will create more chuckles than scares so if you are easily
horrified, this film’s for you to train your guts. For
Die-hards, it will be fun meeting your old friend again but
you will wish that he just whacked his own child to death.
