Review:

"It was said that in 2046, nothing ever changed. Nobody knew for sure if it
was true, because nobody who went there had ever come back - except for one.
He was there. He chose to leave. He wanted to change."
The above paragraph was the synopsis found on major movie website and
publication. In spite of being marketed heavily as if it was a sci-fi
romance movie, this latest art-piece by Master Director, Wong Kar Wai was
not an Asian remake of "Back to the future" but a sequel to the melancholic
love story between Zhou Muyun (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) and Su Li-Zhen (Maggie
Cheung) of the "In the Mood of Love" fame.

Wong Kar Wai has again proven himself as a "zen" Director who movies are not
easily comprehended by the audience. To understand his "mood of love" this
time, you have to pay attention to the two stories written by the movie's
soul character, Zhou Muyun: 2046 and 2047.
2046 tells a story of a mysterious train left for 2046 every once in a while. The passenger who heading to 2046 had the same intention of
recapturing their lost memories. No one wants to leave 2046, except Tak
(Kimura Takuya), carrying a painful memory.

The amount of time, which this train took to travel to and fro the time
line, depends on individual passengers. Some alight within a short time
whereas some never alight. This fully illustrates Zhou Muyun feelings for
his lost love. It may take a short time or maybe ever for him to completely
forgo his feelings for Su Li-Zhen. Needless to say, the character Tak is
actually the writer, Zhou Muyun himself.
By the way, 2046 is the hotel room number. which Su Li-Zhen had stayed in.

In 2047, Zhou Muyun wrote about Tak falling in love with a retarded
robot-waitress on the train. This "robot" was in real life Jin Wen (Faye
Wong), Boss's daughter of the hotel in which Zhou Muyun put up.
In the story, Tak fallen in love with this retarded robot-waitress and had persistently asked it to leave (the train) with him. However, his many attempts do not return with an answer. Soon, Tak gets desperate and went
around asking other robot-waitress and even the human male train attendance
to leave with him!

Tak desperate measures fully illustrated Zhou Muyun feelings for Su Li-Zhen.
When Su Li-Zhen left him, he resort to womanising and got himself tangled up
with another woman of the same name, Su Li-Zhen (Gong Li), as well as many
other women: Lu-Lu (Carolina Lau), Bai Ling (Zhang ZhiYi) and Jin Wen.

Ultimately, it is through Jin Wen love for her Japanese boyfriend that Zhou
Muyun realised that love is not about whether the person you fond of stays
by your side, but it about how discipline and persistence you are in earning
your true love. Jin Wen innocents, talents, and faithfulness towards her Japanese boyfriend
had tingle the heart of Zhou Muyun that when requested by her to amend the
sad ending of 2047 as a wedding gifts for her, he find it hard to pen a good
ending for the story after, "1 hour, 10 hours and even 100 hours"!
(Wickedly-exhilarating here! Watch the movie to appreciate what I mean.)

The conclusion scene where Zhou Muyun rejects Bai Ling offers to spent the
night in her room shows him modeling after the discipline of Jin Wen,
probably with a sense of determination and responsibility towards his true
love, Su Li-Zhen.
By the way, 2047 is the room number, which Zhou Muyun is putting up in the
movie. This room is directly opposite room number 2046.

Set in a mysterious and vintage atmosphere, coupled with musics of the 60s,
the movie is visually pleasing and aural-satisfying. However, it is not
recommended for audiences who just want to relax themselves over a movie.
One thing for sure, Wong Kar Wai's films never allow audience to excuse
their mind. As for me, I walk out of the cinema, eagerly wanted to watch how Zhou Muyun
would become in the next instalment, 2047!

Movie Rating: B+
