SOUTH KOREAN BOX OFFICE HIT - SUPERNATURAL THRILLER THE WAILING ARRIVES IN SINGAPORE

The critically acclaimed South Korean supernatural thriller THE WAILING, which topped the South Korean box office when it first opened in May, finally arrives in Singapore! Opening in South Korea after screening at Cannes Out-of-Competition, it managed to outperform Marvel’s big action blockbuster CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, marking 20th Century Fox Korea’s biggest opening weekend of all time in the country. Known in South Korea as GOKSEONG, the film earned over 5 million in its first week alone, which made for the 8th biggest opening weekend ever for a local film. The title has grossed $40 million so far, and has since expanded to the United States.

THE WAILING is South Korean director Na Hong Jin’s third full-length feature film after THE CHASER (2008) and THE YELLOW SEA (2010). THE CHASER became the 3rd most popular film in South Korea in 2008. Warner Bros. subsequently bought its remake rights for US$1 million. THE YELLOW SEA, another box office hit, was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

THE WAILING revolves around the grotesque deaths of villagers that occur after an old stranger appears in a peaceful rural village. The film stars Kwak Do-Won as the protagonist Jong-gu, Hwang Jung Min as the shaman Il-gwang, and Kunimura Jun as The Stranger.

The movie is distributed by Clover Films in conjunction with Cathay Keris-Films in Singapore and opens on 28th July. It is rated NC16 for Horror and Coarse Language.
